Online Quran Teacher — How to Find a Qualified 1-on-1 Tutor

An online Quran teacher is a live tutor who teaches you the Quran over video call — one-to-one, in real time. They hear you recite, correct your Tajweed, set your pace, and keep you going when motivation dips. That live, listening teacher is the whole difference between learning the Quran and merely watching videos about it.

But not every teacher fits every student. A brilliant teacher for a 7-year-old is not automatically the right teacher for a busy adult or a new Muslim starting from zero. This guide explains what to look for, how matching works at QuranHub, and how to test a teacher properly before you pay anything.

  • Free 3-day trial · no credit card
  • Live 1-on-1 online classes
  • Qualified male & female tutors
  • 24/7 — every timezone

What an online Quran teacher actually does

A good online Quran teacher does four things a recording never can. They listen to you recite — every verse, every class — and correct your pronunciation the moment it slips. They set the pace: slow when a rule is new, faster when it is solid. They track your revision, so old lessons don't quietly fade. And they keep you accountable: someone notices when you miss a class, and someone is glad when you come back.

That is why the teacher matters more than the platform. The same student, with the same books, progresses twice as fast with a teacher who listens carefully and teaches patiently.

How matching works at QuranHub

Matching is a conversation, not a form. Tell us on WhatsApp who the student is, and we match a tutor to the person — not just to a time slot.

  • Tell us the student's age and level — complete beginner, can read, or already memorising
  • Tell us your preference: male or female teacher, and your preferred language (English, Urdu, or Arabic)
  • Tell us your days and times — you choose, in your own timezone
  • Take 3 free trial classes with THAT tutor — the same teacher you would continue with, not a different one for the trial
  • If you continue, the same tutor stays with you every class — and if the fit ever feels wrong, changing tutors is free and unlimited

Meet three of our lead Qaris

Three of our lead teachers are Qari Ateeq Ur Rahman, Qari Sardar Ahmad and Qari Muhammad Saqib. Each is Tanzeem-ul-Madaris qualified with an M.A. in Arabic and Islamiyat, based in Pakistan, and teaches Qaida, Tajweed and Hifz one-to-one. Our full teaching team is 10 qualified tutors — 5 male Qaris and 5 female Qariahs — and you can request a male or female teacher when you book. Full credentials for any tutor can be shared with you on WhatsApp before you book.

  • Qari Ateeq Ur Rahman — Tanzeem-ul-Madaris qualified, M.A. Arabic & Islamiyat
  • Qari Sardar Ahmad — Tanzeem-ul-Madaris qualified, M.A. Arabic & Islamiyat
  • Qari Muhammad Saqib — Tanzeem-ul-Madaris qualified, M.A. Arabic & Islamiyat
  • Qualified female teachers (Qariahs) are available on request, at the same price

Male or female — your choice

We have qualified male Qaris and female Qariahs, and the same quality standards apply to every tutor. Many parents choose a Qariah for their daughters — and for their sons. Many sisters prefer learning with a Qariah. There is no extra charge either way, and no judgement about the choice.

What matters is fit: a teacher who is excellent for an adult sister is not automatically the right teacher for a 7-year-old. Tell us the student's age and level when you book, and we match accordingly.

What to check in the trial class

The free trial is your inspection. Use it properly — three real classes are enough to judge a teacher. Watch for these five things.

  • Does the tutor hear and correct your recitation live, or just let you read on?
  • Do they explain simply, in words you understand — or hide behind jargon?
  • Is the pace right for you — neither rushing nor dragging?
  • Do they give you honest feedback on your level and a clear plan after the trial?
  • Does your child actually like them — and look forward to the next class?

How to verify a teacher

A teacher's qualification should be checkable, not just claimed. The key term to understand is Ijazah: a formal authorisation to teach or recite the Quran, granted by a qualified teacher to a student who has recited the whole Quran to them correctly — carrying a sanad, an unbroken chain of teachers going back through generations. An Ijazah is the strongest credential in Quran teaching, but not every good teacher holds one, and not every claim of one is real.

Ask for specifics, and expect a straight answer. What is the teacher's formal religious education, and from which institution? Who was their own teacher? Can you hear them recite — in the trial class, or in a short recording? A qualified teacher welcomes these questions; a weak one deflects them with vague praise. At QuranHub, our tutors are Tanzeem-ul-Madaris qualified with M.A. degrees in Arabic & Islamiyat — the same standard for male and female teachers — and you can meet the teaching team on our homepage before you book.

  • Ijazah: authorisation to teach, granted after reciting the whole Quran correctly to a qualified teacher
  • Sanad: the chain of teachers behind the Ijazah — ask who the teacher learned from
  • A diploma or course certificate is not the same as an Ijazah — ask which one is being claimed
  • Ask for: institution, qualification, the teacher's own teacher, and a live recitation in the trial
  • Vague credentials ('highly certified', no institution named) are a red flag, not a qualification

Red flags: what a bad teacher looks like

Most bad teaching is not dramatic — it is quiet and slow, and parents notice it months too late. These are the patterns to watch for in the trial and the first month.

  • Rotating teachers: a different tutor every class, so nobody owns your child's progress
  • No correction: the teacher lets mispronounced letters pass, or only says 'good' — correction is the job
  • Vague credentials: 'certified' or 'highly qualified' with no institution, no qualification, and no teacher named
  • Card demanded upfront: payment details before a single real class — a genuine trial never needs them
  • No plan: the teacher cannot say what your child is working on, or what comes next
  • No progress updates: weeks pass with no specific report on what your child has learned

Child safety: what to expect

Your child will spend hours on video with a teacher you have never met in person, so safety is not a footnote. Classes should be private 1-on-1, in your home, where you can sit nearby and observe any class unannounced. All scheduling and communication should run through you, the parent — never directly to your child — and no recording of your child should happen without your consent. Read our full child safety and safeguarding page before you book, and ask any academy the same questions: if their answers are vague, that is your answer.

  • Private 1-on-1 classes only — no group video rooms with unknown participants
  • Parents welcome to observe any class, any time
  • All contact runs through the parent, never directly to the child
  • No recording or use of your child's name, face, or voice in marketing without your consent

What it costs

Plans are $25/month for 2 classes a week, $35 for 3, or $55 for 5 — every class 30 minutes, private 1-on-1, with a qualified tutor. That works out at $3.13, $2.92, and $2.75 per class — so a third weekly class costs only $10 more a month than two. The 3-day trial is completely free, with no credit card and no obligation. There is no extra charge for choosing a female teacher, and you can pause or cancel anytime. See the full plans on our fees page.

Why 1-on-1 beats a group class or an app

In a group class, your child might read aloud for two minutes in a whole lesson. In a 1-on-1 class, they recite for the full 30 minutes — and every mistake is corrected on the spot, before it becomes a habit. An app cannot hear pronunciation at all, so it cannot correct it either.

That is the simple arithmetic of progress: the more of the teacher's attention you get, the faster you learn. It is also why our students' parents so often say the same thing after the trial — 'I wish we had started sooner.'
